KYOTO, Japan's the most ancient city which has more than 2000 years of history and ancient capitol of Japan, too.
The Emperor and his royal family stayed there more than 1900 years until move to Tokyo in 1890.
Kyoto and Tokyo are very complicated name for foreigners. It looks like "Kyo" and "to" combined. The difference is just look like which word is in front or after. But "to" of Kyoto and "to" of Tokto has different meaninig.

The ancient capitol of Japan was called just "Kyo." And the Kyo was the capitol, so people called it "Capitol Kyo." The "Capitol Kyo" in Japanese is "Kyo-to." The "to" means "big city or a capitol."
Tokyo's former name was "Edo" which was named by Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa when he became a shogun in eraly year 1600s.
Japan was governed by shogun Tokugawa in Edo for next 360 years.
When the shogun family returned the government to the Emperor in 1868, the emperor family moved to Tokyo.
When the emperor moves to Edo, the name of Edo was changed to "Tokyo" which means "Kyo of East." "To" of Tokyo means "East."
